Building Carolina Bays Parkway

A new extension of the Carolina Bays Parkway — also known as South Carolina Route 31 — extends 7.5 miles from its current terminus at SC Route 544 to SC Route 707. The new six-lane freeway includes a grassed median and an approximately 3,600-foot-long pre-cast, pre-stressed concrete girder/plate girder steel bridge over the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.

The project also includes two twin 120-foot-long concrete slab bridges over wetlands. There is also a 220-foot long precast, prestressed concrete girder bridge at the SC Route 544 interchange and 148-foot long single span plate girder steel at the SC Route 707 interchange. Additional project highlights include 350,000 cubic yards of excavation, 990,000 cubic yards of import borrow and 150,000 square feet of 9-inch concrete pavement.

The project provides a new, high-speed route for travel in the area, relieving congestion along other nearby highways, as well as helps improve hurricane evacuation times.
