Tower Road Construction Breaks Ground in Commerce City, Colorado

Broomfield, Colorado (May 11, 2016) – Work on Tower Road officially “took off” on Tuesday, May 10, as project team members and elected officials celebrated the groundbreaking of the widening project.

Dignitaries and team members signified the groundbreaking with stomp rockets, which soared into the blue sky as a front loader made the first dig for the project.

“Today’s groundbreaking is not only a celebration of long-planned improvements to Tower Road,” Mayor Pro Tem René Bullock told the gathered group of residents and officials. “It’s a celebration of a major road project under construction in the $137 million capital improvement program approved by voters in 2013.”

The project, which is expected to be completed in late 2017, will add another lane in each direction along Tower Road between E. 80^th and E. 103^rd avenues, improving the operation of this busy arterial roadway. In addition, bike lanes, sidewalk and multi-use path will be constructed to provide pedestrians and cyclists a safer commute.

Other improvements to the area include acceleration, deceleration and turn lanes; street lighting; traffic signals at 81st, 88th and 96th avenues; a raised and landscaped median; and moving the overhead electric lines underground. Landscaping also features drought-tolerant plants, drop irrigation and a landscaped area near Second Creek underpass that will include fruit trees and an area for public art.

“Flatiron is appreciative of the trust that Commerce City has put in us to build this project,” project manager Steve Cordts said.
