(Longmont, Colo.) February 8, 2010 - Flatiron, one of the nation's largest transportation and infrastructure contractors, has been awarded more than $200 million in new transportation contracts throughout California.
At the Los Angeles Airport, Flatiron will execute a $95 million contract for the reconstruction and improvement of Taxi lane S. Awarded by the Los Angeles World Airports, this two-year project includes the demolition of several buildings, replacement of existing pavement section, and installation of new airport lighting, storm drainage system and fueling system. The project is scheduled to break ground in February and will last approximately two years.
Flatiron is also constructing new auxiliary lanes and ramps on Interstate 110 in downtown Los Angeles for the California Department of Transportation. Work on the $19 million contract will begin in March and will last three years.
Also for the California Department of Transportation, Flatiron will realign and widen 5.5 miles of state Route 76 by increasing capacity to two lanes in each direction. The $61 million project, from Melrose Drive in Oceanside to Mission Road in Bonsall, will begin in February and includes the construction of three new bridges, more than one million cubic meters of earthwork, 163,000 tonnes of asphalt concrete paving, and installation of new storm drainage and water systems. The project is funded by federal stimulus money and is estimated to last approximately 30 months.
In northern San Diego County, Flatiron will replace the trestle approach to Bridge 207.6, an existing timber structure located on a portion of the rail corridor connecting Los Angeles to San Diego. The bridge will be reconstructed in place by building new foundation system under the existing wood trestle bridge and placing precast box sections during three weekend closures. The $26 million project will begin in March and is expected to open in spring of 2011.
