Flatiron’s Washington District Hosts Second Annual Equipment Rodeo

July 15, 2022, was a day of exploration, networking, skill-building and reflection for Flatiron’s Washington District office-based employees.

More than 25 contestants from Flatiron and joint venture partners Lane Construction competed in an “Equipment Rodeo” at the I-405 Renton to Bellevue project yard in Renton, Washington. Contestants included project engineers, project accountants, environmental specialists and interns. Team performance was judged by safety specialists and those who have firsthand experience with operating equipment — foremen and superintendents.

The project’s operations team set up four courses for the Equipment Rodeo — Excavator Bump and Run, Forklift Jitters, Wild Skid Steer Relay and Shoring Trivia. Safety briefings and equipment training were given.

For many office workers, this was the first time they operated construction equipment. It was a great opportunity to learn new skills and gain greater appreciation for their colleagues in the field.

Each team was scored based on the time it took to complete each course, number of obstacles hit and (of course) style. The top four teams took home prizes and bragging rights. In first place were Solomon Jackson, Mohammad Aliniya, Kevin Daniszewski, Nazar Zaynchkovskyy and Abbas Hamadi.
