Calaveras Dam Replacement Project Awarded USSD 2019 Constructed Project of the Year

Broomfield, Colorado (March 20, 2019) – The Calaveras Dam Replacement Project, a joint venture of Dragados USA, Flatiron and Sukut, has been awarded the 2019 Constructed Project of the Year by the United States Society on Dams (USSD).

The annual award recognizes a water resource project with significant contribution to the dam community and/or to society that met the challenges of the nation’s aging infrastructure in an era of limited financial resources and increasing environmental awareness.

The project was nominated separately by two entities and ranking of nominations were based on the following criteria:

  • Best use of the resource for sustainable water resources management
  • Innovative design or construction techniques
  • Efficiency of design (cost, materials or time)
  • Overcoming significant challenges — technical, physical, management
  • Benefits resulting from the project construction

The award will honor the team of professionals responsible for the project and will be officially announced during the USSD Annual Conference in Chicago on April 9, 2019.

The Calaveras Dam Replacement in Sunol, California replaces the original dam, built in 1925, with a new 210-foot-high earth and rock fill dam designed to accommodate earthquakes on the Calaveras Fault. The project includes construction of a new 1,550-foot-long spillway utilizing 40,000-cubic-yards of concrete, construction of a new intake/outlet tower consisting of a 20-foot-diameter by 163-foot-deep vertical shaft and three new tunnels to convey water to and from the reservoir.
