Megan Pym joined Flatiron in August of 2018 and contributes to the company’s success through her work as a project engineer for the East Coast Division. She has previous experience in estimating but working in the field is her true passion–she’s served as a field engineer, superintendent, mechanical QC manager and environmental manager prior to her current project engineer role.

Having now worked in the industry for more than seven years, Megan is accustomed to being one of very few, if not the only, women on a job site. She is conscious of making sure her voice is heard and says having a mentor and supportive work environment makes facing challenges much easier.

“With Flatiron, doors and email boxes are always open and I like that. There are opportunities here for career as well as personal growth,” she said.

Teamwork is key to the success her division’s current I-85/I-385 Interchange project, because of the challenges and constraints faced every day, Megan explained. This is her first project with Flatiron and she says those challenges keep her work fresh and exciting. The design-build joint venture involves the construction of 12 new bridges and is designed to relieve congestion and increase safety on the third busiest interchange in South Carolina.

Supporting and empowering other women working in the heavy civil field is a priority for Megan and she’s eager to talk with women seeking guidance in starting or advancing their careers in the industry.

“The future infrastructure needs means a lot of interesting and unique work that we can be a part of building,” she said, “I am now starting to see more and more female field engineers in the industry which is awesome!”

Megan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from Old Dominion University.
