Building San Diego International Airport Green Build

As the largest improvement project in the San Diego International Airport’s (SDIA) history, the $1 billion “Green Build” project was named due to SDIA’s commitment to sustainability, environment, and its positive economic impact. This project provided 1,000 jobs at peak construction along with a number of contract opportunities for small businesses.

Flatiron, in a joint venture with Turner Construction and PCL Construction Services, Inc. (Flatiron/Turner/PCL), worked on the expansion of the Terminal 2 West building and airside (the runway side of the new terminal building). Turner managed construction of the 470,000 square-foot expansion as the majority partner and design-builder. Flatiron acted as the construction manager for the airside portion of the contract.

Work included the following:

  • Construction of a three story, ten gate expansion to reduce terminal congestion and expanded waiting areas that includes a ticket lobby, airline check-in, security screening, baggage handling, seating areas, concessions, and support space
  • Approximately 1.5 million square feet of new taxiway and jet parking
  • Nation’s largest new USO Center near Gate 19 in Terminal 2
  • On-site project management office

On April 9, 2014, SDIA was awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification for The Green Build terminal expansion. The award makes SDIA the first LEED Platinum certified commercial airport in the world.
