Flatiron’s E.E. Cruz to Deliver Bronx River Parkway Bridge Replacement

August 31, 2023

The new bridge will replace a deteriorated bridge over Amtrak and CSX rail lines on the Bronx River Parkway – improving safety and mobility. Innovative construction methods will reduce traffic and train-travel disruption during construction.

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has selected Flatiron’s E.E. Cruz subsidiary for the $137.7 million best-value bid-build project to replace the Bronx River Parkway Bridge. The complex infrastructure project will require ongoing collaboration with Amtrak, CSX, MTA and the current Penn Station Access project.

“We welcome this opportunity to collaborate with NYSDOT and construction partners to improve safety and mobility of transportation infrastructure in the Bronx,” said Joe Sheehan, President, E.E. Cruz & Co. Inc. “Throughout the project, we will demonstrate our commitment to the community by embracing the NYSDOT’s Disadvantaged Business Enterprise utilization goals and by prioritizing procurement of services and materials from local businesses.”

The innovative construction solution proposed by E.E. Cruz includes using a custom-engineered lifting system versus a conventional crane setup to build the mainline of the bridge. During construction, this should reduce Bronx River Parkway lane closures as well as Amtrak/CSX general track outages that are required for demolition and construction of the new structure.

Along with the bridge replacement, the E.E. Cruz project team will improve roadway alignment, provide standard 12-foot travel lanes, add shoulders and construct a dedicated exit ramp to East 177th Street. Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2023 – with completion expected in August 2026.

This project strengthens the E.E. Cruz infrastructure construction portfolio in the New York metropolitan area – adding to vital projects such as the Battery Park City Authority North/West Resiliency project announced in February and the currently underway MTA Forsythe Street Emergency Ventilation Plant. These projects are consistent with the E.E. Cruz and Flatiron strategy to build on successful relationships in local markets and to secure contracts offering balanced risk profiles and opportunities for enhanced collaboration with clients.
