Flatiron JV to Deliver North Carolina Roadway Improvements to Prepare for U.S. Open Golf Championships

October 18, 2023

Roadway improvements will reduce conflict at intersections — enhancing safety and traffic-flow efficiency in the Southern Pines, Aberdeen and Pinehurst areas.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has selected Flatiron and joint venture partner Fred Smith Company for a $103.5 million project to provide necessary infrastructure improvements in preparation for upcoming U.S. Open Championships at Pinehurst Country Club.

This is Flatiron’s first Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) project with NCDOT — a time-sensitive project requiring major work to be completed between the 2024 and 2029 U.S. Open Championships.

“We welcome the opportunity to collaborate with Fred Smith Company and NCDOT to improve transportation flow in preparation for high profile events in the Pinehurst area,” said Jim Schneiderman, Flatiron Senior Vice President for Mid-Atlantic. “We are already working with stakeholders to create the overall project plan. Going forward, we will continue to collaborate to identify innovative solutions to challenges along the way.”

With extensive experience in collaborative delivery, Flatiron is working closely with NCDOT, Fred Smith Company and other stakeholders during the initial preconstruction phase to optimize the project’s design to minimize construction risk. The complexity of coordinating with six other projects that are part of this initiative makes the CM/GC delivery method ideal. The goal is improved construction safety, quality and efficiency — as well as higher certainty of construction cost and schedule.

Construction will widen and upgrade N.C. 5, U.S. 15 / 501 and U.S. 1. Currently the project team is collaborating with NCDOT to develop an overall utility relocation, construction phasing and traffic management plan to maintain traffic flow and to provide access to businesses and residences throughout construction.

This project is consistent with Flatiron’s strategy to build on successful relationships in local markets and reinforces Flatiron’s prominent infrastructure construction presence in North Carolina, adding to:

  • Three I-95 improvement projects with a combined value of more than $900 million.
  • The $59 million U.S. 70 Freeway and Interchanges project.
  • A 1.5 mile segment of Winston-Salem Northern Beltway valued at $126 million. (In November 2022, Flatiron completed an adjacent segment valued at more than $400 million.)
  • The N.C. 540 A&B projects with combined values exceeding $400 million.

In the past six years, Flatiron has been awarded more than $2.2 billion in NCDOT infrastructure projects.
