Western Division Provides Scholarship Awards for Build-A-Bridge Program Winners

Our Western Division team has partnered with Benicia High School in California for the past six years, providing internships and scholarships to seniors who participate in Flatiron’s Build-A-Bridge program.

Build-a-Bridge involves 6-8 weeks of training students to read plans, as well as introductions to engineering, estimating, scheduling, and learning AutoCAD drafting software. The students worked at Flatiron’s Benicia district office and were taught by industry professionals.

For their final project, they put together a construction bid package. The students were given bridge plans and asked to perform quantity take-off, construction means and methods, a project schedule, and bid pricing.  Each student submitted their bid and gave a presentation to four panel members.

The winners of the 2016 Build-A-Bridge program received scholarships. They are, as follows:

Connor Hatfield: $2,750 scholarship and an internship at Flatiron for the summer of 2016 and 2017

Michael Sanderson: $1750 scholarship and a 2016 summer internship

Arielle Sexton: $750 scholarship

Brian Hung: $750 scholarship
