Building 2nd Avenue Subway Station Finishes

This project was the eighth of ten contracts awarded as part of Phase 1 of the Second Avenue Subway expansion. The scope of work consisted of the fit-out of the main station, entrances, and ancillary structures associated with the 96th Street Station. Construction included the rehabilitation and retrofit of the existing 99th to 105th Street tunnels, the construction of the invert slab and benches in the new 87th to 92nd Street tunnels, the installation of structural concrete work, and the supply and installation of major mechanical and electrical systems within the station. Other work along 2nd Avenue and adjacent side streets included major utility relocations, the furnishing and installation of glazed storefronts and canopies, maintenance and protection of traffic, and the restoration of sidewalks, pavements, curbs, signage, striping, and landscaping. Once completed, the 96th Street Station will be fully operational and ready for strap-hangers on the new Second Avenue Subway.

Key project elements include:

  • Maintenance and protection of traffic to support all work operations during 10 stages of construction
  • Work associated with the construction of a new station entrance which includes the installation of secant pile, installation of a jet grout SOE, and final excavation
  • 50,000 CY of structural concrete including invert, mezzanine, and roof slabs, walls, platforms, ancillaries, and entrances
  • Construction of interior walls and rooms and the installation of architectural finishes including: masonry/ stone/tile work, misc. metals, metal ceilings and wall panels, interior signage, doors and hardware, exterior walls with glazing and louvers
  • Furnishing and installation of: HVAC in the station and tunnels, general and emergency lighting, elevators and escalators, plumbing including a track drainage system, and fire suppression systems
  • Coordination with follow-on contractors to expedite the completion of the 96th street station
  • Integration and testing of systems
  • Removal of bracing and temporary road deck
  • Restoration of utilities in final locations including: 9000 LF steel trunk and DIP distribution water main, 90,000 LF Con Edison electrical distribution and services ducts, 700 LF Con Edison gas main relocation, 300 LF sanitary and storm sewers, and 18,000 LF of Empire City Subway telephone distribution and services ducts
  • Landscaping and reconstruction of streets, sidewalks, and cellar doors
  • Final station cleanup and preparation for Revenue Operations
  • Operation and Maintenance of the station for 13 months before start-up
  • Environmental impact mitigation including air, noise and emission controls
