Flatiron to Deliver Vancouver Island Highway 17 Keating Cross Overpass

April 18, 2023

A priority of the British Columbia South Island Transportation Strategy, the “flyover” overpass in East Saanich will improve safety, enhance travel efficiency and contribute to environmental sustainability through reduced idling times and related exhaust emissions.

The $54.6 million (CAD) Flatiron project will replace the northbound left-turn onto Keating Cross Road with a flyover overpass to improve safety along the busy corridor by eliminating the need to turn across traffic.

“We welcome the opportunity to collaborate with B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and the Vancouver Island community to deliver this important transportation improvement,” said Ken Tanner, Flatiron Vice President for Operations in Canada. “Throughout the project, we will demonstrate our commitment to the community by prioritizing local hiring and procurement of services and materials from local businesses, First Nations and local contractors.”

Along with constructing the flyover, the project will include:

  • Widening Keating Cross Road to accommodate additional traffic
  • Installation of a sidewalk on Keating Cross Road to enhance safety for cyclists and pedestrians
  • Installation of facilities for future bus rapid transit on the Pat Bay Highway
  • Realignment of the southbound on-ramp to Victoria.

This project strengthens Flatiron’s infrastructure construction portfolio in western Canada – adding to the Steveston Interchange, Harris Road Underpass and Ruskin Dam projects currently underway. All these projects are consistent with Flatiron’s strategy to build on successful relationships in local markets and to secure contracts offering balanced risk profiles and opportunities for enhanced collaboration with our clients.

Construction will begin May 2023 and completion is estimated for the summer of 2025.
