Peace River Bridge Twinning Project Wins Two Minister’s Awards from Alberta Transportation

The Highway 2 Twinning – Peace River Bridge Project received the 2022 Minister’s Excellence Award for Transportation Innovation at the Consulting Engineers of Alberta’s 2nd Annual Transportation Connects Alberta Conference.

Additionally, the Flatiron-Aecon Joint Venture was awarded the 2021 Alberta Transportation (AT) Construction Partnering Award in the Major Projects Category.

Valued at $163.3 million, the Highway 2 Twinning – Peace River Bridge Project started in October 2017 and was completed in October 2020. Located on the banks of the Peace River in northwestern Alberta, the Highway 2 Twinning – Peace River Bridge Project involved construction of a two-lane, 563m steel girder bridge and twinning of 1.6km of Highway 2 through the Town of Peace River.

The Project was the largest design-bid-build contract ever awarded by the client, Alberta Transportation, and involved complex construction techniques, including the record-setting launch of 125m bridge spans. The project was recognized for its innovative construction techniques in the following aspects:

  • Schedule Efficiencies
  • Process Adaptions
  • Use of Innovative Equipment and Techniques

The strong collaboration and partnering efforts of all team members fostered an environment where the project team worked together to apply innovative construction ideas to overcome significant project challenges. Since its completion, the new bridge has been seeing more than 17,000 vehicles per day, improving access to key resource areas and safety for travelers, local residents and businesses.
